2010 Season of Heritage Worship Events Announced

Following on from the success of our 2009 season of heritage worship events, the 2010 programme has just been announced. Generally services take place on the last Sunday of each month throughout the open season though there are some variations.

Life by Chocolate (Sunday 28th March at 2.30 p.m.): Our 2010 season gets off to a sweet start as we explore how issues of faith and chocolate intersect historically and in the present. Those who have not given up chocolate for Lent will particlarly enjoy this service....

Revolutionary Ranters (Sunday 25th April at 2.30 p.m.): What is the relationship between Christian faith and political radicalism? Historical and contemporary examples help us in our musing.

Feasting on the Mountain Top (Sunday 30th May at Mow Cop at 2.30 p.m.): The annual open air service returns to the top of the hill followed by a second service at Mow Cop Methodist Church at 5.00 p.m.).

Transatlantic Revivalism (Sunday 27th June at 2.30 p.m.): Primitive Methodism emerged from influences on both sides of the Atlantic in a century that saw constant transatlantic traffic in the culture of revivalism. Join us for a musical service and hear that fiddle play....

Behind the Scenes at the Museum (Sunday 25th July at 2.30 p.m.) AT HOUGH CHAPEL, COBBS LANE, HOUGH. The generosity of the Crewe circuit has recently presented Englesea Brook Chapel & Museum with an opportunity to use the Methodist Church at Hough for museum purposes (the church closed in April). This will greatly alleviate the pressure we currently have on storage.  In this service we will explore how particular artefacts in the Englesea Brook collection speak to our contemporary situation and our Chair of District, Rev'd Peter Barber, will lead us in an act of dedication.

Time Off for Good Behaviour (Sunday 29th August at 2.30 p.m.): Following on from last year's study day, a service exploring the importance of leisure and play. Warning: This service includes some play so be prepared to enjoy yourself!

Three Churches to the Benediction (Sunday 12th September at 2.30 p.m. THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED THOUGH YOU CAN STILL ENJOY A GREAT AFTERNOON PARTICIPATING IN THE TRANSPORT PROGRAMME AT ENGLESEA BROOK

Bringing in the Sheaves: A Victorian Harvest (Sunday 26th September at 2.30 p.m.): In 1851 England became the first country in the world where more people lived in towns than in the countryside. Arguably some sections of society began to lose touch with their connection to the land (reducing 'all is safely gathered in' to an anthem of Lancashire corset factories). Nevertheless, a pre-supermarket, unrefrigerated world in which many foods we now consider essentials were prohibitively expensive equipped the Victorians with a deeper sense of the value of the harvest. Join us as we learn from them the true value of the food on our plates.

Soldiers of the Cross (Sunday 14th November at 2.30 p.m.): For Remembrance Sunday we look back to the experiences of people of faith in times of war and consider what they have to say to us today.

A Victorian Christmas Service  (Sunday 12th December at 2.30 p.m.): Come dressed as a Victorian or come as you are for our annual celebration of Christmas past and present!
